The Union of Superiors General (USG) is a forum for the leaders of male religious orders to reflect on issues facing religious life today. The 88th Assembly of the Union of Superiors General took place between 23rd and 25th November 2016, in Rome at the Salesianum conference centre.
The main theme of the gathering was “The Fruitfulness of the Prophetic in Religious Lifeâ€. Talks were given by Fr. Bruno Cadoré, O.P., Master General of the Dominican Order (who coordinated the topics), Fr. Michael Perry, O.F.M., Minister General of the Franciscans, and the Prior General of the Carmelites, Fernando Millán Romeral, O.Carm. (pictured), who spoke about the challenges in the leadership of religious life today in view of ministry both “ad intra†(within the Order) and “ad extra†(outside the Order).
The morning of Friday 25th was entirely taken up with a meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican in what is known as the Synod Hall. The meeting took the form of an open dialogue with the Holy Father, who was asked a number of questions about prophesy in religious life. Just as it was three years ago, an official summary of this study day will be written by Fr. Antonio Spadaro, S.J., and will published in a variety of languages.
Beforehand, on 22nd November, the Superiors General of mendicant orders met, at the invitation of Fr. Saverio Cannintrà , O.C.D., the Provost General of the Discalced Carmelites, and the representative of the mendicant orders. That meeting included discussion of a number of questions relating to the process of writing a new Mutuae Relationes document on the relations between bishops and religious in the Church, considering the most recent documents from the Vatican Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life on the subject of cloistered women (such as the Apostolic Constitution Vultum Dei quaerere), and other notes of interest to our orders.
