News from The Leaven Secular Institute
17 August 2010

The Leaven (The Institute of Our Lady of Mount Carmel) is the Carmelite Secular Institute in Britain for single people who wish, live leaven in the dough, to live a consecrated life in the midst of their own homes and workplaces. Founded in 1949 and formally affiliated to the Carmelite Order in 1965, it offers a deep experience of Carmelite spirituality to its members, who profess the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity and obedience.

Over 20 of its members spent 8 days on retreat between 31st July and 7th August at The Emmaus Centre in West Wickham, run by the Daughters of Mary and Joseph.

The group invited a Carmelite friar from York, Fr. Antony Lester, O.Carm., to lead the retreat.

The last day of the retreat, Feast of the Transfiguration, was a day of special celebration with a new first profession in the Institute, one renewal of vows and a celebration of 25 years of profession.
