Lay Carmelites in Scotland and the North take time to pray
29 July 2010

Two annual events organised by Lay Carmelites in the North of England and in Scotland have taken place in recent weeks.

The annual Northern Lay Carmelite Retreat took place at Minsteracres retreat centre (pictured) run by the Passionists near Consett in County Durham between 18th and 20th June 2010.

Input was given by Fr. Kevin Melody, O.Carm., who was making his first visit to the group and to Minsteracres. He took as his theme "Keeping Watch in Prayer", challenging participants to examine their own prayer life and relationship with God. All the talks were very well received and prompted much discussion.

Over the course of the weekend some people made important steps in their commitment to the Carmelite way of life. Stephen McKie of Bedlington Chapter was received into the Third Order, whilst his mother Elizabeth McKie made her first profession of promises. Maureen Turner from Newcastle, a professed Carmelite for over 16 years, made her Profession of Vows.

The weekend was very well attended and blessed with really good weather. Teresa Kelly of the Bedlington Chapter was  thanked for the organisational work done in preparation.

On 17th July 2010 the annual Carmelite pilgrimage took place at South Queensferry, near Edinburgh. The Priory Church of St. Mary is the only medieval Carmelite building in Britain from before the Reformation to have survived intact as a place of worship, now in the care of the Scottish Episcopal Church, who were very hospitable as usual.

Mass for the Solemnity of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was celebrated by Fr. Richard Copsey, O.Carm. The 25 or so participants were mostly members of the Glasgow Third Order Chapter, which has organised the pilgrimage since the 1970s.

After the celebration of the Eucharist, the pilgrims shared a festive meal in a nearby restaurant.
