Carmel of the Annunciation - Thicket Priory
Carmel of the Annunciation
Welcome to the webpages of the
Carmel of the Annunciation at Thicket Priory
Here at Thicket we are a lively community of nuns who live the Carmelite life in the tradition of Saint Teresa of Avila.
Our community of 11 nuns has sisters aged from their 30s to their 90s and pretty much everything in between.
Having lived since 1955 in the adjacent Jefferson Hall, in June 2009 we moved into our new monastery which has been designed to help us live prayerfully in harmony with the beautiful nature which surrounds us and which minimises our impact on creation.
We are fortunate to live just 8 miles south of York and 10 miles north of Selby in a beautiful area of countryside. Nestling in the Vale of York and within sight of the low hills known as the Yorkshire Wolds, the beauty spots near Thicket include the Wheldrake Ings Nature Reserve, the Lower Derwent Valley National Nature Reserve, and the Escrick Park Estate which incorporates Skipwith Common National Nature Reserve.
At Thicket we are a happy and forward-looking community, with our values rooted in the ancient tradition of Carmel. We play an important part in the life of the area and have strong ecumenical links with local churches as well as those who come here for quiet days and times of reflection.
We invite you to follow the links below to see something of how we live our Carmelite vocation today.
