The British Province of Carmelite Friars

Whitefriars - York

In 1995 the British Province accepted the invitation of the Bishop of Middlesbrough to take on the care of the Chaplaincy to The University of York. The move to the City of York marked the restoration of our presence where there had been a Carmelite community from 1250 - 1538. The last known friar in the City was George Rayner who died for his faith in York Castle around the year 1600.

At the university the Carmelite chaplains work as a part of an ecumenical team as does another member of the community who serves as chaplain to the local general hospital.

Like their forbears the Carmelites are very active in the life of the City especially in the area of education. Whitefriars York is currently the provincial house and the base for the projects and publications office.

As well as the community of friars York is also home to a community of Discalced Carmelite nuns and a community of Corpus Christi Carmelite sisters.
