Following a decision made at the 1978 Provincial Chapter that the Province should explore a move into an inner-city Parish the Archdiocese of Southwark entrusted the pastoral care of English Martyrs, Walworth to the Carmelite Friars. The new community moved into the Parish in 1980 with Fr. Richard (Dickie) Hearne being the first parish priest.

Some 20 years later the friars continue to build on the work of those who have gone before and to help build a community of faith which will be able to respond to the present and future needs of the area. A priority for the parish community as a whole is that ministry is shared across the parish and is not just the preserve of the friars.

There are currently three friars working as part of the parish community: Kevin Melody (Parish Priest) Pat O'Keeffe and James Moran.
