The British Province
of Carmelite Friars
East Finchley
This friary serves as one of the study centres of the province and the Order. It was established in 1996 as a house of initial formation for brothers who had just finished their noviciate and who were beginning their formation for ministry at the nearby Missionary Institute. As the future of the Institute became uncertain and it eventually closed the house has become a centre for further (post graduate) studies for our own brothers and in a particular way for brothers from emerging areas of the Order.
At present one brother from India and one from Indonesia are a part of the community both involved in higher-level studies which, when completed, will enable them to make a contribution at this level in their own countries.
East Finchley is a large house and a number of retired brothers form a part of the community. It also acts as a fairly central point for meetings and is the base for the provincial bursar. In the summer months is often a venue for Carmelites from different parts of the Europe who want to spend time to learn or to improve their knowledge of the English language. .
